Go Green Challenge: Challenge Details

On February 12 we announced the launch of our first Go Green Challenge. While Apollo’s environmental commitment is perpetual, we designated the weeks and months leading up to Earth Day (April 22) as the Go Green Challenge, concentrating our efforts to see just how much positive change we can drive through the organization. These individual and location-based efforts are critical to ensuring that the company as a whole is fulfilling its environmental commitment.

As we reach the half-way point, we are writing to again ask you to personally step up to embrace sustainable living practices at the office and in your daily routine. Your contributions, small or large, are crucial to making a difference in your community and on the environment as a whole. You most likely have taken the first step in our journey to attain sustainable living by completing the Sustainability 101: Going Green Web tutorial and pledging your support online alongside company founder John Sperling.

Each location now has an official Green Team Captain. Your Captain will be working with your local team over the next few weeks to coordinate individual and collective environmental improvements. To track our progress throughout the country, locations will earn points based on their success in a number of environmental areas. Your Green Team Captains will complete location-based surveys that let us know how everyone is doing. On April 11, the locations with the most points will be recognized. Here’s how you can help your location earn points:

  • Complete the Sustainability 101: Going Green course.
  • Pledge your commitment to the environment on the company’s Go Green Web site.
  • Attend the upcoming Living Green Expo, an informal gathering in a common area at your location. Contact your Green Team Captain for more details.
  • Actively participate in recycling aluminum, glass and paper through your location’s recycling program.
  • Reduce your daily energy usage by turning off your computer, lights and other equipment at the end of the day.
  • Use alternative modes of transportation or carpooling to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Utilize reusable containers and utensils to eliminate the need for break room products.
  • Consider joining the Green Team at your location, which will meet quarterly to discuss and facilitate local green initiatives.
  • Share your personal knowledge of environmental topics and issues by distributing or posting articles and tidbits.

At the end of the Challenge, location winners will be selected based on the progress of the overall location. Results will be calculated from surveys at the end of the Challenge, which will be weighted to account for size and opportunity differences among locations. There will be three location winners.
